Valentine’s Day is a day filled with roses and chocolate. Hearts are everywhere and love is the word for the day. Couples venture out on dates, and cupid strikes unsuspecting hearts.

But in middle school, it gets pretty complicated. It’s not elementary school where we gave boxes of chalky candy hearts with messages by force to the entire class. And It’s not high school where everyone seems to be going out with somebody, and people actually have a person to drool over.

Sure, middle schoolers sort of “date” and the school markets Valentine’s Grams. There are a few gifts given, yet they are mostly for friends, nothing more.

“It’s kinda fun to be with my friends because I don’t have a valentine,” said 7th grader CailaniD.

“Valentine’s day is a great way to thank my friends and family for how much care they give me,” added 6th grader Wade B.

That about sums it up.

The school seems to have mixed feelings about people dating. We have 1-2 “dances” each year, and one of them is limited to 8th graders. But, they also sell Valentine’s Grams for “that special someone.” So which side of this are you really on, Mr. Apodaca?

“Students should ask their parents before making personal choices.” said assistant principal Mrs. Terassi.

Valentine’s Day may be a day of chocolate hearts, but students in a middle school don’t always see it that way. There might be a few exceptions, but the vast majority of students at Day Creek don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day the way people do in romantic movies.

“I don’t really care for Valentine’s Day, because you should appreciate everyone, not on just one day,” said 7th grader, Jayleen R.
