The Butner Creedmoor News Thursday May 19 1988 7 Hawley School News by Trad Bullock Teacher Appreciation Week was held two weeks ago and the teachers at Hawley School would like to say thanks to everyone for making them feel greatly appreci ated Many teachers received special treats from different students to show them they realty are appreciated One special thanks should go to the members of the Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) for making our week a little more special by providing us with doughnuts one day ham and sausage biscuits another and beautiful corsages and boutonniere for us to wear The PTSO is an important part of our school and we appreciate all the hard work you do for the school During this week also students in Mrs Bess 4th period science class were given a special treat Greg ishel meterologist from WRAL TV 5 in Raleigh broadcasted them live on the Noon show from classroom Also the 6:00 Evening program the same night featured another short weather segment from Hawley During this segment Denise Pate a 7th grader was interviewed Several seventh grade students including Neil Woodlief and Will Shaffer were interviewed live on camera and asked about several weather projects and terms Shaffer commented on how relative humidity was determined weather unit was developed and presented to her by the North Carolina State Department of Instruction and is a broad program that helps students become aware of the weather how it is determined and forecasted and many other aspects about it By the looks of the students and how eager they are about this unit we have many prospective meterolo gists at Hawley School! Brian Edmondson has been selected as the final of the for the 1987 88 school year Edmondson is a student in Ms Lyneice homeroom He enjoys playing games especial ly Bingo He also enjoyed going to Special Olympics recently Edmondson says he is looking forward to the summer and able to watch my favorite TV show Price is Congratula tions Brian! Class Of 1936 Re Union The Class of 1936 of Creedmoor High School held its 52nd Reunion on Saturday evening April 23rd at TK Tripps Restaurant on the Chapel Hill Boulevard in Durham The following classmates were in attendance at a seated dinner: Linwood Newton and wife Hazel Newton Lou Ellen Green Veasey and husband KO Veasey Jr lorine Curl Davis and husband Mark Davis and Gertrude Goss Ernbree all from Durham Ray A Sherron and wife Effie Sherron from Northside Vida Lee Peed Senter and husband John A Senter from Lillington Graham Rogers and wife Ruth Rogers from Graham Helen armer from Atlanta Georgia Special guests were Miss Vertee Umstead of Bahama who taught the classmates and Ellen Gooch King and husband Herman King of Goldsboro Ellen was with the class until the 11th grade when she transferred to Stem High School Other members of the class who are unable to attend were Virginia Dare Lyort Warren of Plantation lorida Marvin Clay of Kettering Ohio Mr and Mrs Thaxter Wheeler of Asheville and rances Wood Overton of Oxford The class made many attempts to locate another member of the class Buck King who lived at Hester Anyone knowing his whereabouts is asked to contact Mrs KO Veasey Jr or Linwood Newton in Durham The class met for its 50th reunion in April 1986 and plans are to meet again in April 1989 at the home of Graham and Ruth Rogers in Graham In the seventh grade social studies class of Mr William Crews students were given a special opportunity to hear all about of the and how our government gives news papers all over the country this freedom Mr Jim Cribbs from the Durham Morning Herald spoke to this class about all the aspects involved in running a newspaper company Cribbs is the newspaper and education coordinator for the paper and he teaches teachers how to use and facilitate the newspaper in the classroom During his presentation he stresses that students should enhance their reading skills through reading the newspaper Durham Morning Herald is a larger corporation who trys in many ways to stress how important reading is to all Herald is in the process of expansion also Cribbs Students were given a newspaper to practice their reading skills with The students as well as Crews would like to say thanks to Cribbs for coming to Hawley School and sharing this valuable information with them Recently the seventh grade social studies classes of Ms Jeffrey Roberts held a map drawing contest This contest was held in connection with their study of Japan Three prizes were awarded from each class that participated Then a first second and third place winner was chosen from those finalists The top winners were as follows: first place Rich Hockaday second place Michelle Meredith and third place Mandy orsythe inalists from each class were Philip Green Curvis Jones Shane Dreibelbis Joe Machado Matthew Pool Carol Roquet Tony Chism Todd Wilkins and Dan Cash In the sixth grade enrichment classes of Mrs Beth Harward and Mrs Eva Nobles some very fun and exciting activities are occurr ing In Nobles classes a special schedule is set up On Monday the classes have different art activities Tuesday and Thursdays are solely devoted to working on their science kit activit ies A study and tutoring session is held on Wednesday and riday is physical education (PE) day outride Several of the art activities they have mastered so far are sewing geometric designs etching blade tempera pictures weaving and making wind socks In the kits students have worked on electricity and swinging systems units enrichment classes have been working on some really fun things also During the first three nine weeks students wrote books This final nine weeks Harward had the same children so they are doing several different aedvkies Once a week the gkb are becoming more physically fit by doing aerobics Other days students will be making art projects like stained glass windows out of tissue paper having physical education classes and will "act several plays one special activity Harward shared recently with the entire team was slides of her European trip to (daces like London and rance It was a special trip for her and she wanted to share it with her students rom the looks of things many fun rewarding and exciting events have been occurring in these sixth grade enrichment classes AMOUS BRANDS OR LESS!
