Why? Well, simply put…because kids LOVE playdough! Also, our brains make lots of connections and remember things well when learning is tactile and interactive, two things that definitely define playdough!

Letter recognition activities go hand in hand with name recognition activities, and both are perfectly suited to playdough practice.

All you need is some colorful playdough, some alphabet cookie cutters and a name tag for each child. Soon your preschoolers will have name recognition mastered with these playdough names!

Name Activities for Preschoolers Using Playdough

Name recognition is a pivotal skill for preschoolers, forming a fundamental link between their self-identity and the world around them. The ability to recognize and spell their name not only boosts their confidence but also lays the groundwork for early literacy development.

Best Playdough Recipe Ever

If your preschoolers are going to be making playdough letters, then you need just the right homemade playdough recipe to get the job done right. This playdough recipe without cream of tartar is the perfect combination of soft and pliable while still holding its shape.

The Set-Up

If you have made individual containers of playdough for your students, set the container on a tray with some alphabet cookie cutters. Depending on the skill level of your preschoolers, you can select the letters for them, or they can rummage through the entire alphabet to find the letters in their name.

Arrange everything on a tray to make things look nice. Add small manipulatives of your choice. We used pom poms here, but you can also use any of the following:

• floral gems
• acrylic gems or table scatter
• toothpicks or mini craft sticks
• snap cubes
• buttons
• cut up straws
• pebbles

Really, you can use just about anything! Be creative. (Or open you craft cupboard and pull out the first thing you see, which is what I typically do). How to Teach Letter Recognition with Playdough

It’s important for children entering kindergarten to be able to not only recognize their names but to also spell them. There is one clear skill that is needed to master their names- letter recognition. The two go hand in hand. In fact, name writing has become the go-to assessment at many kindergarten orientations. It’s a quick way for teachers to gage if a child has:

• letter knowledge
• sound knowledge
• print awareness skills
• pencil grasp development
• letter formation

So, what does it take to teach letter recognition and name recognition with playdough? Just a few easy steps!

Most preschoolers probably know just what to do to make nice, smooth flat pancakes. My preschoolers do this automatically, but you can model it if you need to. You can offer some playdough rolling pins or preschoolers can use the palms of their hands to press and flatten the playdough. This is an essential way to practice fine motor skills and it’s a kid favorite!

Some preschoolers choose to make one giant pancake for all their letters, while other preschoolers choose to use a different color playdough, and a different pancake for each letter. Either method is fine, and you can let your preschoolers choose, or direct them if you have a preference.

Once the playdough is rolled flat, it’s time to cut playdough letter cookies using the alphabet cookie cutters!

You can do this activity independent of name practice if you feel it is beneficial to introduce or practice new letters. You can also merge letter recognition practice with name practice at any time, since they organically go together. Playdough letters can be a great way to practice a “letter of the week” if you have one and also review letters that have already been taught.

How to Teach Name Recognition

There are several ways to approach teaching name recognition with playdough and what you choose to do will depend mostly on the readiness of your preschoolers.

If you have already worked with playdough letter as described above, then your preschoolers are already experts on rolling and flattening the dough and cutting their playdough letters. If not, it should just take a quick demonstration from you and your preschoolers will be creating perfect playdough letters in no time!

When doing this playdough name activity, there are ways to cater to beginners and ways to challenge those that are ready:

1. If you have really young preschoolers, offer a name tag with their name letters and have them match them one-to-one before cutting their playdough. Use these playdough activities for toddlers too!
2. Offer younger preschoolers only their own name letters, but scramble them so they can still practice name spelling.
3. Have older preschoolers find the letters of their name from the entire set of alphabet cookie cutters. You can also challenge older preschoolers to identify other students with the same letters in their names, or the same sounds.

You can offer your preschoolers a name tag to follow the letters of their name, or they can make their letter cookies in any order.

I tend to encourage my preschoolers to go in the order of how to spell their name, but if they cut their letters out of order, they can practice putting the letters in the right order.

Adding manipulatives and having your preschoolers decorate their playdough names helps them work on their pincer grasp, which is needed to develop a mature writing grasp.

In summary, there are many variations in this activity, and you can select which ones will best meet the needs of your individual kiddos.

Instructions

1. Prep the materials (playdough, cookie cutters, small manipulatives) and arrange in an inviting way on a tray or tabletop.
2. Before inviting the children to begin, model how to roll out the playdough and how to carefully use the cookie cutters to cut the letters.
3. Review the expectations, including not mixing playdough colors if that is important to you.
4. Invite the children to start making the letters in their names out of playdough. I recommend having a nametag available for each child to use as a guide (as needed).
5. I like to demo a name and show how we read it left to right, and make the letters one at a time, from left to right. It is okay if the children do not make the letters in order, but if they don't, guide them (as needed) once they have cut all their letters.
6. Invite the children to add manipulatives to their letters. They can gently push them into the playdough, so they stick.
7. I like to listen to the children's comments as they make their letters and build their names. Encourage discussion of what they observe as they work and ask questions to help promote learning.
8. Have fun and encourage the kids to build their names more than once in different ways, if there is time.
