UCF Introduces New Academic Calendar

UCF’s 2024-25 academic calendar is introducing accelerated terms that will provide students with greater flexibility and shortened pathways to obtaining a degree. They also support the university’s strategic efforts to become preeminent, which carries additional funding to enhance our excellence and impact.

Here’s What You Need to Know

  • UCF colleges will determine the courses, if any, that they’ll offer in the accelerated sessions. Classes available in accelerated semesters will be limited at first.
  • The spring and fall semesters will include the traditional 16-week term (Session 1) and two new sessions:
    • Session F: First eight weeks
    • Session G: Second eight weeks
  • Two other accelerated sessions will now be options:
    • Maymester session spans four weeks in May and is part of the summer semester.
    • Asynchronous Winter Intersession (online only) takes place mid-December through early January and is part of the spring semester.
  • The summer semester will continue to offer sessions A, B, C, and D.

Important Dates

March 4: Provost Johnson will email students announcing the new calendar. The academic calendar webpage for students will launch.

March 11: The new academic calendar will be published, and students will receive their Summer and Fall 2024 registration appointments.

March 28: Summer and Fall 2024 registration begins.

General Questions
Why is UCF changing its academic calendar?

The new accelerated sessions allow students to select courses that suit their schedules and earn their degrees in a timely fashion. They also support the university’s strategic efforts to improve undergraduate graduation rates, a key metric for theState University System of Florida’s preeminence status, which carries additional funding to enhance the excellence and impact of UCF.

When will students learn about the new academic calendar?

On March 4, Provost Johnson will email all students announcing the new academic calendar. The communication will include a link to a website that will include a comprehensive FAQ.

How is UCF changing its academic calendar?

Beginning in the 2024-25 academic year, UCF is providing additional class scheduling options to colleges. They will determine the courses (undergraduate- and graduate-level) that will be offered during the accelerated terms.

  • In addition to the full 16-week term (Session 1), two new sessions will be added to the fall and spring semesters:
    • Session F: First eight weeks
    • Session G: Second eight weeks
  • Two more accelerated sessions will now be options:
    • Maymester session spans four weeks in May and is part of the summer semester.
    • Winter Intersession (online only) takes place mid-December through early January and is part of the spring semester.

When does the new academic calendar go into effect?

The calendar launches in the 2024-25 academic year. You will be able to register for accelerated terms for the Summer and Fall 2024 semesters. Maymester will be offered for the first time in Summer 2024.

Which courses will be offered in the new accelerated sessions?

UCF’s colleges have the option to offer courses during the accelerated semesters andwill determine if they will offer any classes. Available courses will be listed in mySchedule Builder during the term’s registration period. Classes available in accelerated semesters will be limited at first.

New undergraduate FTIC and transfer students cannot enroll in Maymester or Winter Intersession their first semester they begin to take classes.

Will the accelerated term options be available for all degree programs?

UCF’s colleges will determine the graduate and undergraduate courses and degree programs that will be offered during the accelerated sessions.

How will classes in the accelerated sessions differ from full-term courses?

The material covered is the same as a full-term class taught in a shorter time. Students taking classes in accelerated sessions should expect longer class times (except for the Winter Intersession that is asynchronous and online) and learning to happen at a quicker pace.

How does the new academic calendar impact admissions?

There is no change to UCF’s admissions process. New FTIC and transfer students cannot enroll in Maymester or Winter Intersession the first semester they begin to take classes.

Can students add, drop, and withdraw from the accelerated terms?

Yes. Students will have the option to add, drop, and withdraw from courses in all UCF terms. These deadlines will be published in the academic calendar.

What’s UCF’s Withdrawal Policy for the new accelerated terms?

UCF’s Withdrawal Policy applies to all terms. Visit the Withdrawal Policy page for information.

Will Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading be offered during the new accelerated terms?

Colleges will determine the courses available with Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading. UCF’s S/U grading policy remains the same.

Are tuition and fees impacted by the length of the session?

No. Current UCF tuition and fees are based on credit hours for the course. Contact UCF’s Student Account Services for additional information.

Are financial aid and scholarships impacted by the new accelerated terms?

Contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance for information.

Maymester
What’s a Maymester?

Maymester is an intensive four-week session that offers the same credit as traditional semester-length classes, utilizing longer meeting times for each class.

Is the Maymester part of the summer term?

Yes. Maymester is a session within the summer term.

Will the credit hours be part of the total credit hours students can take in the summer term?

Yes.

What’s the add/drop and withdrawal deadlines for Maymester?

Will student care services be available during the Maymester?

Student services will be available. All registered UCF students can schedule an appointment with a Student Care Services staff member for various reasons and needs, including academic, financial, or personal distress, including medical concerns or follow up care. If I am experiencing issues with Webcourses, whom should I contact?

If a student is enrolled in the Maymester, are they eligible for summer housing?

No. Housing is not available during the Maymester term. Housing will be available for students with a 12-month housing contract.

Asynchronous Online Winter Intersession
What’s a Winter Intersession?

Winter Intersession is an asynchronous online, intensive three-week session that offers the same credit as traditional semester-length classes.

What are the add/drop and withdrawal deadlines for the Winter Intersession?

Will student services be available during the Winter Intersession?

If students need assistance during the term, they should contact the appropriate office (e.g., Office of Student Financial Assistance and Registrar’s Office).

Will the Registrar’s Office be available to assist students during the Winter Intersession?

The Registrar’s Office will provide limited phone support over the winter break. The service is limited to live phone calls.  Emails will not be monitored.  Students needing phone support from the Registrar’s Office should call 407-823-3100.

If I am experiencing issues with Webcourses, whom should I contact?

Both faculty and students should contact Webcourses@UCF Support. You can contact Webcourses@UCF Support by phone (407-823-0407), email (webcourses@ucf.edu), live chat, or their Online Support Form.

During the Winter Intersession, will the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) have limited hours?

CDL has always provided some limited support service during the university’s winter break. This service consists of several hours a day of email monitoring and responding on all days except actual holidays (e.g., Christmas and New Year’s Day). Phone service is not available. At this point, we intend to maintain this existing level of Webcourses email support during the Winter Intersession.

Enrollment
Is a student considered enrolled in the summer semester if they take classes in Maymester?

Yes. The Maymester is summer enrollment.

Is a student considered enrolled in the spring semester if they take classes in the Winter Intersession?

Yes. Winter Intersession is spring enrollment.

Will a student be able to enroll in more than 17 credit hours in the fall and spring terms?

No. UCF’s policy has not changed. You can take up to 17 credit hours across all term sessions.

How does the new academic calendar impact student athletes?

Student athletes should consult with Academic Services for Student Athletes regarding enrollment in these new sessions.

How does the new academic calendar impact international students?

International students should contact UCF Global regarding the impact of enrollment in these new sessions on immigration or SEVIS matters.

How are students who utilize Veteran Education Benefits impacted?

Students utilizing Veteran Education Benefits should consult with the Office of Military and Veteran Student Success.

Registration
How do students register for the new fall and spring sessions, Maymester, and the Winter Intersession?

Registration will occur in myUCF through the normal registration process. Students will register for Maymester courses during summer registration and Winter Intersession courses during spring registration.

Faculty
How do I find out if my college is offering any courses during Maymester or Winter Intersession?

Please reach out to your department chair or school director.

How will faculty members be compensated for teaching during the Maymester and Winter Intersession?

For in-unit faculty, please refer to the 2023 MOU between UFF and the UCF Board of Trustees regarding compensation for Maymester and Winter Intersession.

Will the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) be available to assist me develop courses for the Maymester or Winter Intersession?

Yes. Faculty who plan to teach during the Maymester or Winter Intersession should contact their instructional designer (ID) as soon as possible to begin the course redesign process. Faculty must already be credentialed to teach online. Waiting too long to engage with an ID and other CDL services may result in an inability to provide support in time.
