Building a sense of togetherness among students can significantly impact their engagement and well-being. Many interactive and enjoyable strategies can build a classroom community and help it thrive!
From student jobs to friendship-building lessons, these ideas will help create an inclusive and cohesive environment while bringing fun into your teaching practice.

What is a classroom community?
A classroom community is a supportive and inclusive environment where students and teachers come together to learn, collaborate, and grow. It goes beyond simply being a physical space and includes the relationships, interactions, and shared values that create a sense of belonging and unity in the classroom.
For the most part, students feel safe to express their thoughts and ideas, collaborate with their peers, and develop social and emotional skills. It emphasizes the importance of respect, empathy, and active participation, creating a place where everyone feels valued and supported. All in all, a classroom community promotes a positive learning environment that increases students’ academic achievement and development.
Easy and Engaging Classroom Activities
These activities aim to create a sense of belonging in the classroom community, promote positive relationships, and create a supportive learning environment. Each activity will help with collaboration, empathy, and respect between students, from student jobs to team-building exercises. By implementing these activities, you can create an inclusive classroom community where students academically and socially thrive.
Student Jobs
Assigning classroom roles to students in the classroom fosters a shared responsibility and a sense of ownership within the classroom community. The entire class thrives when meaningful classroom jobs for students are given, and they are encouraged to be contributing members of the classroom.
By giving students specific jobs, such as first aid helper or peer leader, you empower kids to contribute actively to the classroom and develop leadership skills.
Team Building
Engage students in team-building activities that help promote teamwork and collaboration. From group projects to problem-solving challenges, these experiences allow students to work together, learn from one another, and develop a shared sense of achievement. Some of my absolute favorites are the marshmallow tower, newspaper fashion show, and hula hoop pass.
Morning Meetings
Kick-start each day with a morning meeting to foster a positive and connected classroom community. These gatherings allow students to greet one another, share news, engage in icebreaker activities, and get to know you games. It sets a positive tone for the day and creates a sense of harmony.
I implemented morning meetings during my first year of teaching to foster a strong classroom community. Initially, students were shy, but something beautiful happened as we continued the routine.
One morning, we shared one thing we appreciated about our classmates. The positive responses sparked a ripple effect of active listening, support, and celebration. After that, friendships blossomed, and even shy students found their voices. Our morning meetings became a cherished time where everyone felt respected and valued.
Altogether, investing in our classroom community transformed our learning experiences, allowing for a close-knit and supportive environment throughout the year.
Classroom Contracts
Create a sense of responsibility and accountability within the classroom community by coming up with classroom expectations and norms through a classroom contract. Involve students in developing the guidelines for behavior, respect, and inclusion. Having kids contribute to the contract will help get them invested just a little more! Once done, display the contract somewhere in the classroom as a visual reminder of the shared commitment to a positive learning environment.
Role Play
Promoting empathy is essential for a compassionate classroom community. Engage students in role-playing activities that encourage understanding and empathy. Consider making role-play a game during your SEL lessons and morning meetings where kids act out different scenarios. This allows them to step into each other’s shoes and build deeper connections.
Gratitude
Gratitude is when students can recognize and appreciate the positive aspects of one’s life and express thanks for them. In the classroom, gratitude is important because it creates a positive and supportive place where students and teachers alike feel valued and acknowledged.
Gratitude Pick-Up Sticks is a delightful and interactive game that promotes gratitude and positive thinking among students. The game involves a set of colorful sticks, each representing a different category of things to be grateful for, such as family, friends, nature, or personal achievements. Players take turns picking up a stick, and then they share something they are grateful for related to the category on the stick.

Kindness Challenge
Bring kindness into your classroom community throughout the year with a kindness challenge. Create a challenge with daily or weekly acts of kindness for students to choose from. Encourage them to share their experiences and reflections, creating a caring and supportive atmosphere.
The kindness calendar is an excellent tool to spread kindness and compassion throughout your classroom community. Each day presents a new opportunity for students to choose an act of kindness, such as helping a classmate, writing a kind note, or doing a random act of kindness in their community.
Social Skills Games
Integrate social skills games into your lessons to encourage social interactions and effective communication. Games like “Would You Rather,” “The Name Game,” or “Two Truths and a Lie” prompt students to engage, connect, and develop stronger social skills, helping the classroom community.
Brain breaks can even be used as social skills activities when completed with a friend!
Positive Rewards
Make community-building exciting with positive rewards and challenges. Set goals as a class, such as sharing toys or demonstrating exceptional teamwork, and celebrate achievements with special rewards or privileges. Friendship-Building Lessons & Activities

Begin each day with a thought-provoking question encouraging kids to share their thoughts and experiences. This simple activity encourages learning about one another and encouraging meaningful conversations that strengthen the classroom community.
